Shifting wave energy perceptions: The case for wave energy converter (WEC) feasibility at milder resources

چکیده

Wave energy can provide significant benefits as renewables acquire more share in electricity production. So far, focus for the development of wave is given to areas with resources ? 25 kW/m, moderate often not considered. Furthermore, waves have larger uncertainties associated diverse portfolio converters leading higher Levelized Cost Electricity (LCoE). This study challenges notion economic viability resources, therefore methodology and results this analysis are globally applicable. Several different types suggest multi-zonal applicability, underlying dependence on resource that be harvested. It clear zones favour alternative converters, common characteristic all nominal capacity below 1 MW. Optimally selected attain factors over 30%, LCoE depending discount rate-capital pairs, mean values from 150 250/MWh lowest value 60 €/MWh. Investment amortisation also depends pairs an offshore farm able retrieve its capital 3.8 years (optimal case), 10 (average). Projects 3 Million €/MW a risk 10% viable only high performing devices 40%. • A nearshore surge device has smaller max CF but lower deviation ?27%. The highest WEC 53% difference ?50% mean. Moderate “smaller” P o ? 600 kW. Discount rates greater less than M 35%. well-matched obtain viability.

Turbine development for the Wave Dragon wave energy converter

The Wave Dragon is a wave energy converter of the overtopping type which has been developed by a European consortium during the last five years. It uses a set of low head water turbines as power takeoff system. In the course of a two year research programme the basic conception of the turbines has been established, the turbine geometry has been designed and a model turbine has been built and te...

Preliminary Verification and Validation of Wec-sim, an Open-source Wave Energy Converter Design Tool

To promote and support the wave energy industry, a wave energy converter (WEC) design tool, WEC-Sim, is being developed by Sandia National Laboratories and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. In this paper, the WEC-Sim code is used to model a point absorber WEC designed by the U.S. Department of Energy’s reference model project. Preliminary verification was performed by comparing results ...

Modelling the WITT wave energy converter

This presentation describes work undertaken as part of INNOVATE UK funding led by Witt Energy Ltd to investigate the efficacy of a novel design of wave energy converter (WEC). A sealed spherical hull is floating on the surface of the water (Fig. 2(b)) and is moored to the sea bed under a four point catenary mooring system. A mechanical device known as the WITT (Fig. 1) is housed within the hull...
